Listening, Learning, Leading: Lived Experience Inspires Future Occupational Therapists at Bond University

Another impactful morning at Bond University saw our participants step into the classroom to share their lived experiences with Master of Occupational Therapy students—creating a powerful space for connection, reflection, and growth.

These sessions are a cornerstone of our work, offering future allied health professionals the opportunity to hear directly from people with disability about what truly matters in practice. It’s a reminder that effective support starts with listening, keeping an open mind, and always placing people at the centre of care.

This session was no exception—easily one of our best yet. The conversations were honest, insightful, and at times, filled with humour. Beyond the learning for students, it was equally powerful to witness our participants continuing to build confidence, find their voice, and grow each time they step into this environment.

The impact on students was immediate and meaningful. One shared, “I thought it was so interesting to hear about their life experiences, to hear about how they have coped and continued trying to do things that they love. It was very special that they were willing to share their stories with us.”

Another reflected on a shift in perspective, saying, “We always learn about trying to understand the client, but I never thought that the client might have to put in a lot of energy trying to understand me. That is very important for me to consider when I am working with people therapeutically.”

Students also spoke about the broader influence of the session, with one noting, “I have to think more about ways I can support other people, like employers and teachers, to be more understanding and inclusive when they support people with a disability.”

And perhaps most simply—and powerfully—captured: “Amazing to have these guests come and share with us like that! I loved the funny, humorous stories.”

These reflections highlight exactly why these sessions matter. They go beyond theory, challenging assumptions and shaping more thoughtful, inclusive future practitioners.

We are incredibly proud of our participants for their openness, honesty, and willingness to share. Their voices are not only heard—they are helping shape the future of allied health.
