From Finland to the Foam: How International Students are making waves and friends at GCRS

It all began when Anna-Louise Kassulke our CEO, attended a conference and met Kati, a professor from Satakunta University of Applied Sciences in Finland. That chance meeting sparked a partnership that has continued to grow over the past 15 years—bringing a wave of passionate and talented students to our shores.

Since then, more than 30 Finnish students have completed their placements here in Australia, spending around three months gaining hands-on experience—most while studying physiotherapy or occupational therapy.

And the exchange hasn’t stopped at Finland. We’ve also welcomed students from the Czech Republic, Japan, and the USA, each bringing their unique backgrounds, perspectives, and energy to our inclusive programs.

These international students don’t just come to learn—they come to contribute. They’ve become an integral part of our community, helping to support people of all abilities while gaining invaluable real-world experience in inclusive practice.

In our interview questions, the current Finnish students Dinuri and Tuisku reflected on how the placement has not only deepened their professional knowledge but also transformed their outlook on inclusive sport and community engagement. And, of course, they’ve fallen in love with the Aussie lifestyle—from the friendly faces to the golden sand.

Read below for Dinuri and Tuisku’s GCRS journey and insights—proof that sometimes, one conversation at a conference can lead to something truly powerful.

Introduction – your name, where you are from and what you are studying?
Hi! I’m Dinuri Rodrigo (pictured right) and I’m from Sri Lanka. I’m currently studying for my bachelor’s in physiotherapy in Finland.

Why did you choose to do your placement with us?
I’ve always dreamed of getting experience in Australia, and when I found out about rec and sport, I was so excited. It was the perfect fit! I’m really passionate about working with the disability community and learning how inclusion works in real-life settings. As a future physiotherapist, I felt this placement would give me a better understanding of how I can contribute meaningfully in this sector. The moment I read about what you guys do, I knew I had to be part of it.

What has been the highlight so far of working with us?
Definitely getting to meet so many different clients and seeing how independent and confident they are in their lives and work. It’s super inspiring. Plus, being involved in so many different programs as a volunteer has taught me so much. Oh, and i can now say i’ve tried surfing—even if i mostly mastered the art of falling, haha!

What have you learnt so far whilst on placement with us?
From a physio perspective, i’ve learnt that movement isn’t just about structured exercise. There are so many fun, engaging ways to keep people active that also support their mental health. I’ve also learnt a lot about communication, taking initiative, and being responsible. It’s been such a valuable experience all around.

What do you love most about staying on the gold coast?
The beaches!! And just nature in general—everything is so beautiful here. The people are super friendly and welcoming too. It’s honestly the perfect place to explore, learn, and enjoy the little things.

Introduction – your name, where you are from and what you are studying?

I’m Tuisku (laine) (pictured left) from western Finland from city of Pori. I’m doing my clinical practice in GCRS as part of my physiotherapy studies.

Why did you choose to do your placement with us?

I wanted to do my clinical practice abroad, but I knew I would want it to be in a country where I can talk English so that I’m able to communicate well with the clients. After a talk with my friend, I realized I could go further than Europe, unlike I first thought.  And when our physical activity teacher who is specialized to adapted physical activity told me about GCRS, I knew this would be place I want to see as well as the country. And I was not disappointed!

What has been the highlight so far of working with us?

Easy, people! The people here make it magical. The smiles and hugs that you receive in the mornings when everyone is excited for the upcoming day, the little chats and jokes you have with them here and there, or the happy smiles when clients achieve something they have worked for. Those moments are easily my favourite thing about working here. Of course, i also love to be able to be outside during the day and seeing different places, but i think nothing can compare to the amazing people you get to work with here.

What have you learnt so far whilst on placement with us?

I think i have learned that people can do anything if we just give them the chance to do so and help them on their way there the way they need. I’ve also learned very much about cultural differences and that has been interesting to notice.

What do you love most (so far) about staying on the Gold Coast?

The nature here is so amazing, it feels sometimes unreal. But I think the thing for me has been the vibe and energy that surrounds this place. Even when the city is hustling and it’s a busy morning, there is still this calm and relaxed feeling to it, that just feel really comfy and homey.
