For 24 years, Chay has been a constant and much-loved presence at Gold Coast Recreation and Sport (GCRS), building friendships, developing his talents and leaving an enduring mark on the community — particularly through the Stage Worx Drama Program.
Chay’s journey with GCRS is not simply measured in years, but in relationships. Some of his closest friends today are originals from the very inception of the drama program — friendships that have stood the test of time and speak to the sense of belonging and connection that inclusive community programs can foster.
Through his involvement with the Stage Worx Drama Program, Chay has taken to the stage at least twice every year for more than two decades. That is an extraordinary commitment — and an extraordinary body of work. But it is not just the number of performances that makes his contribution remarkable; it is the passion, creativity and leadership he brought to each one.
Stage Worx Drama teacher Wendy reflects warmly on Chay’s impact:
“Chay’s involvement with Stage Worx goes back over 24 years and each of those years he would have participated in at least two performances. He was always an enthusiastic performer, had a real grasp on drama techniques and, with his amazing memory and language skills, always achieved major roles in our stage productions.”
Chay didn’t just perform — he elevated those around him. His natural understanding of character and expression often saw him contributing ideas that extended beyond the basics.
When exploring emotional expression in class — the usual “happy, sad, angry” — Chay would dig deeper.
“Annoyed. Frustrated. Impatient,” he would suggest.
These additions were not only entertaining for staff and teachers but challenged his fellow performers to stretch themselves creatively. As Wendy fondly puts it, “Such was the mettle of the man!”
His leadership and initiative earned him the honorary title of “Assistant Director.” Chay was always eager to contribute suggestions and creative direction, embracing collaboration and supporting his peers.
Over the years, his talents extended beyond performance into writing and production. Chay contributed two original scripts that were performed by the group. One was based on a favourite science fiction series, which he co-wrote with Wendy to help translate his imaginative ideas into script format. More recently, he adapted an episode of the iconic British comedy series Fawlty Towers, complete with planned stage directions — and he even created many of the props himself in his art class.
These contributions showcase not only his creativity but his dedication to the full theatrical process — from concept to curtain call.
Reflecting on his long involvement, Wendy shares:
“All in all, he has been a very valued member of Stage Worx and it has been a delight and pleasure to have had his involvement for all the years. It has been an honour to know such a special young man.”
Chay, from all of us at GCRS – Thank you for your contributions to the organisation and the drama program.
