Meet David: A Dedicated Volunteer and GCRS Legend
David is an incredible volunteer with GCRS, dedicating his time and energy to support participants in getting on the water and sailing at Varsity Lakes every week. A part of the GCRS family for over a decade, David recently celebrated a remarkable milestone—his 88th birthday!
To mark the occasion, David enjoyed a celebration surrounded by his favourite sailing friends. This weekend, he’s gearing up for a fun wheelchair race at Hinze Dam with James, a GCRS participant. (pictured below with David) Afterward, they plan to enjoy a well-deserved lunch together. Be sure to stay tuned for photos from the big race!
David volunteers twice a week and says it’s what keeps him motivated to jump out of bed every morning. You’ll also find him at our annual Trec for Rec event, enthusiastically cheering on participants as they tackle the 5km or 10km walk or run.
Volunteers like David are the heart of GCRS, and we’re so grateful for everything they do. Thank you, David, and a big shout out to all of our incredible volunteers who make a difference every day!
Wheelchair Race update!!
We spent an amazing Saturday up at Hinze Dam with Jimmy, his carer Natalie, and our wonderful friend Jo Manning.
We had a little race across the top of the dam—Natalie had to push Jimmy’s chair while I was in my motorized Powerchair. Even at full speed, they still managed to beat me to the finish line! After that, we took a long walk down to the shores of the lake, got caught in a quick rain shower, and then made our way back to the café for a well-earned lunch. The whole area is super wheelchair-friendly, and we had a fantastic time.
This is fast becoming a regular tradition, and Jimmy has already chosen the GC Botanical Gardens for our next adventure after overhearing me mention how much I’d love to visit again.
Also, I just want to take a moment to acknowledge Jo Manning. She’s been a dedicated volunteer for over a decade, and when my wife Robyn passed nearly four years ago, she helped me through a really tough time. Over the years, we’ve become close friends, and she’s always there to support our clients—whether it’s Jimmy, Rowan and his parents (John & Tracy), or anyone else we meet outside of our volunteer days. She truly has a big heart and is loved by so many.
Looking forward to our next outing!
