Annual Athletics Championships
Beginning in 1986, the Gold Coast Cabs Annual Athletics Championships has grown from 80 athletes from 3 schools to today catering for over 1000 athletes from 35 schools
It is the only event in South-East Queensland that is specifically for children with a disability, focusing on participation along with providing a valuable stepping stone for children wishing to progress to a competitive level.
The Event Day
The day commences with a march past at 9.15 am with each school parading the athletics oval dressed to match their chosen theme. This is followed by the official opening ceremony with the lighting of the flame – the events equivalent to the Olympic flame.
There are approximately 400 events including track sprints, wheelchair events, a sports skills challenge and a Goodwill Games component.
The majority of these students seldom get the opportunity to participate on a competitive level.
Gold Coast Recreation & Sport Inc will be holding the event for its 31st year at Runaway Bay Sports Super Centre. Gold Coast Cabs have been the major partner of the event for 30 years. Gold Coast TAFE, Emmanuel College and Guardian Angels also volunteer students to provide support and hand out ribbons.
In 2016 we were very excited to welcome Borobi, the Commonwealth Games mascot, who took part in a wheelchair race.
Additional support is provided by Gold Coast businesses, schools, teachers, parents, carers and community organisations such as Special Olympics Queensland.
The event has also had many notable guests (premiers, mayors and well known athletes) over the years to support and officiate at the opening ceremony.
